Questions about Relocating to Costa Rica

Every day, we receive many questions about relocating to Costa Rica and our tours. Here you can find the most frequent questions regarding Costa Rica Relocation and our answers to them.

  • DO I NEED A VISA TO VISIT COSTA RICA?
Costa Rica does not require a visa for citizens of many countries (e.g.: USA, Canada, most European countries). We recommend checking your status online.
You must, however, have a valid passport (for at least 6 more months after your departure date) and a return (onward) ticket to enter the country (this applies to all foreigners). All tourists are limited to UP TO 90 days in the country.

  • ARE THERE SPECIAL PASSPORT REQUIREMENTS?
Currently, there are no special passport requirements in place.

  • IS A COVID-19 (TEST/VACCINE) NEEDED TO ENTER THE COUNTRY?
You do not need your COVID-19 test/vaccine to enter Costa Rica.

  • WHAT AIRPORT DO I FLY TO FOR THE RELOCATION TOUR?
The majority of our tours require you to fly into the international airport Juan Santamaria (SJO), 30 minutes from the capital city of San Jose.

  • WHEN SHOULD I BOOK MY FLIGHT FOR THE TOUR?
According to surveys conducted by numerous airline ticket services, the best airfare to Central America may be obtained by booking around 2-3 months before your departure date. You should book your flight at least 30 days before the start of your tour.
Important: To guarantee a timely pick up at the airport and transportation to the hotel, please forward your travel information to us as soon as possible.

  • DO I NEED TO MAKE HOTEL RESERVATIONS?
No. All you have to do is book your tour.

  • WHAT IS THE SALES TAX IN COSTA RICA?
Currently, the sales tax is 13%, it’s included in the price.

  • WHAT NUMBER SHOULD I DIAL FOR EMERGENCIES?
Dial 911 for immediate assistance in the event of an emergency. For crime and safety information in Costa Rica click HERE.

  • CAN I ARRIVE BEFORE MY CHECK-IN DATE?
Yes, you can. But the cost for your hotel with the check-in date before the start of the tour is your responsibility.

  • CAN I STAY AFTER MY CHECK-OUT DATE?
Yes, you can. You are welcome to make arrangements to stay in the country longer after the checkout date at your hotel at your expense.

  • CAN I ENTER COSTA RICA WITH A ONE-WAY TICKET?
Whether traveling by air, land, or sea, all visitors must have an entry and exit ticket to enter the country.

  • CAN I USE MY CELLPHONE IN COSTA RICA?
In Costa Rica, an unlocked phone will work. You can call your wireless operator ahead of time to add worldwide roaming to your plan. But using popular apps, like WhatsApp, Signal or Telegram will save you a lot of money. Also, if you are from the USA or Canada, you can use MagicJack or OpenPhone to contact your home country for free and to keep your home phone number!
You can also use your unlocked cell phone in Costa Rica by purchasing a SIM prepaid card. SIM cards are available at the airport’s Kolbi (national telecommunications provider) booth or any telephone company outlet, such as Claro and Movistar.

  • DO I NEED GENERAL VACCINE SHOTS?
Only when traveling to Costa Rica from Africa (Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Gambia, Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Sudan), Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Brazil, and the Republic of Guyana, the yellow fever vaccine certificate is required. The vaccine must be given at least 10 days before the start date of your trip.

  • CAN I USE MY DEBIT/CREDIT CARD?
All major credit cards and debit cards are accepted. ATMs may be found all around the country. Remember that the only foreign currency accepted in Costa Rica other than colones is USD, so carry some USD cash with you for places that don’t accept cards. The easiest approach to get the greatest conversion rates is to use your card in Costa Rica.
Note: At the ATM, you will be given the choice to accept or refuse the currency rate offered by the machine. We advise declining because your own bank will often provide a better rate.

  • DO I NEED TO CONVERT MY MONEY?
Upon your arrival at the airport, we recommend using an ATM and withdrawing Costa Rica colones.
Although U.S. currency is accepted in most businesses (in denominations of $20 USD), we recommend using colones or your debit/credit card.

  • ARE THERE RESTRICTIONS ON WHO CAN VISIT COSTA RICA?
You will need to communicate with a representative from the Costa Rican consulate in your country to determine if there are any restrictions for a specific nationality to come to Costa Rica.

  • DO YOU OFFER PRIVATE TOURS?
Yes. We offer Private Tours with a two-day minimum. The Private tours are for 2 people minimum in your party and cover specific towns/areas. Please inquire for details.

  • CAN I EXTEND MY TOUR?
Our pre-scheduled tours can not be extended.
But you are welcome to make arrangements to stay longer in the country and take a Private Tour.
